The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) in an information bulletin announced the tentative dates for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Super Speciality (NEET SS) 2024 exam. The exam will likely be conducted on March 29 or 30, 2025.
NEET SS is a gateway for candidates seeking admission into various DM, MCh, and DrNB Super Speciality courses. As per Section 61(2) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, no other entrance exams—either state-level or institutional—will be considered valid for admission to these programs.
NEET SS 2024: Eligibility Criteria
- Educational Qualification: Applicants must hold a recognized postgraduate medical degree (MD, MS, DNB), a provisional pass certificate, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
- Specialty Requirements: The degree must align with the eligible feeder specialty qualifications required for the super specialty courses.
- Registration: Candidates must be registered with either the National Medical Commission (NMC) or their respective state medical councils. Proof of this registration must be presented at the exam center on the day of the exam.
- Foreign Applicants: Overseas citizens of India (OCI) and foreign nationals can apply without NMC or state medical council registration, provided that their PG medical qualification is recognized by the relevant authority in their home country. Additionally, this qualification must be recognized by the corresponding Medical Council or authority.
- Ineligibility: Applicants currently enrolled in or who have already joined a Doctoral Course (DM/MCh/DrNB) through NEET SS are not eligible to sit for this exam.
NEET SS 2023 Overview
Last year, the NEET SS exam was held on September 9 and 10 in a computer-based format (CBT). It was conducted in two sessions—morning and evening shifts. Candidates who scored over 50% in their respective specialty qualified for admission through NEET SS.
Legal Update
In a separate development, the Supreme Court recently asked for responses from the Centre and other parties regarding a plea challenging the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision not to conduct the NEET SS examination for 2024. A lawyer representing 13 aspirants informed the court that the NMC had decided to cancel the exam for this year. A bench consisting of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra is hearing the case.
